Enhancing Water Quality for a Leading Paper Manufacturing Industry in Central India

Project Overview

A leading Paper manufacturing industry located in central India aimed to improve its water treatment process to new heights. Their mission was clear to find a supplier partner capable of treating clarified water to produce Demineralized (DM) plant water at a rate of 106 m³/hr and to transform suspect condensate into polished condensate at 80m³/hr. This ambitious project entailed the design, engineering, manufacture, supply, delivery, construction, erection, and commissioning of a comprehensive water treatment package, including both DM and Condensate Polishing Unit (CPU) Plants, aimed at generating boiler feed water of exceptional quality.

Challenges

The journey to achieve excellence in water quality was fraught with significant challenges

  1. Organic Contamination: The primary source of feed water was surface water, which posed a risk of organic contamination, necessitating precise identification and treatment strategies.

  2. Colloidal Silica Treatment: Post-demineralization, the treatment of colloidal silica, a common issue with surface water, required innovative solutions to prevent its detrimental effects on the boiler and subsequent units.

  3. Process Contaminants: The condensate, after undergoing various processes, was plagued with contaminants that needed to be meticulously removed.

Solutions Offered from Wipro Water

  1. Demineralization Process Enhancement: For Demineralization, a set of filters (Dual media filter & Activated carbon filter) is added to take care of TSS and other suspended impurities. After filtration, suitable resin columns for treating cations and anions are added.

  2. Colloidal Silica Arrest: Implementation of an Activated Carbon Filter Skid of 10 KD post-resin columns to capture colloidal silica, ensuring its removal from the system

  3. Condensate Polishing Unit (CPU) Refinement: For the Condensate Polishing Unit, an Activated carbon filter is added to take care of contaminants like traces of oil, suspended matter etc., followed by a mixed bed polisher to arrest built-up TDS in the condensate.

  4. Achieving Superfine Quality: Both Demineralization & Condensate Polishing Unit streams are capable of delivering superfine quality Demineralization water that is required for feed boiler in view of its longevity.

Results

The implementation of these  water treatment solutions resulted in operational efficiency and environmental responsibility for the paper manufacturing industry.

  1. DM Plant: Meeting and Exceeding Quality Targets: The DM (Demineralization) plant, designed to treat surface water, proved to be a significant success. It not only met but also surpassed the desired water quality targets. This plant effectively removes minerals and impurities from the water, making it suitable for industrial use.

  2. Exceptional Condensate Polishing Unit Application: The Condensate Polishing Unit, designed to treat suspect condensate, resulted in an excellent solution that delivered polished demineralized water, thus reducing waste generation.

  3. Consistent Delivery of Objectives: The robust treatment scheme ensured the consistent delivery of the required water quality objectives.

  4. Resource Recovery Savings: The project significantly contributed to the customer’s ability to achieve resource recovery, enhancing both sustainability and operational efficiency.
